"Records of the young doctor" the first season: british Russia

Based on the autobiographical short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov, “Notes of a young doctor” is one of the weakest BBC drama series in recent years.

In 2008, on the basis of the same stories created feature film “Morphine” directed by Alexei Balabanov. In that picture vision of a young doctor who is sent to a Soviet province, where it begins to be addicted to morphine, was mercilessly sharp, macabre sincere and relentless in pushing for the truth about human nature. In the hospital where he worked the main character, you could feel the stench and the smell of death, and any sexual reflexes intoxicated something of disgust. In the “morphine” pitch-black humor overflowing cup of bitterness, drank the protagonist, leading to the brink of insanity. Filmed under the aegis of the BBC, which mostly great deal with historical or costume styling, “Notes of a young doctor” start while like a parodic version of Bulgakov’s short stories.

Played by Daniel Radcliffe and ambitious young doctor begins to work at the hospital, which could very well serve as a location straight from a British sitcom. Spoken with a precise British accent sentences sound unnatural in the context of the story about a man who went to the Russian hell, the characters represent typical British mentality, rarely even a joke, and stained macabre slapstick subsequent visits to poor villagers completely distort the meaning of the story. Indeed, in some scenes missing only the canned laughter (one of them is the passage in which the main character sees patients with partially shaved beard), who could complete disbelief feelings associated with it, how bad can interpret overwhelming and acute story set in the Soviet realities.

Perhaps a better solution would be to go in the direction of the stylish parody or farce, but developers in the last two episodes (the season consists of four) are scaring all the increasing seriousness and simulated tragedy. And these do not wash or earlier slapstickowych follies, matching the story like a fist to the nose, or in any way do not match the potential dramaturgicznemu story about a man who after reaching the edge of the known world itself saw no other way to survive than to immerse oneself in narcotic bier . Do not help the actors. While Jon Hamm works great in the role of an older version of the doctor, which establishes a dialogue with his younger “me”, so Daniel Radcliffe does not fit the form of doctor-addict – in appearance, behavior, manner of speaking, from literally nothing. The other actors present value of the British sitcom.

I can not say what determined the relative success of ” The note of a young doctor , “perhaps the mere fact of taking arcyciekawego topic” exotic “Soviet reality, but I think this is a product not only professing Bulgakov and so-called genius. “Russian soul”, but kicking them quite shallow grave. I do not need to know “Morphine” Balabanov to see it on the screen.
